Erkki Koponen - Morning

Painting

Painter Erkki Koponen (b. 1899, Helsinki, d. 1996) was a versatile artist and a significant figure in the visual arts scene of his time. As a painter, he is particularly known for his skillful depictions of environments and people; in addition, he worked as a caricaturist and an illustrator of columns. Koponen’s works are primarily representational paintings in the realist tradition, often portraying buildings, landscapes, or people. He had a long career of nearly 30 years at the School of the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts, first as a teacher and eventually as its rector. In his role as rector, he was involved in proposing to Antti Wihuri the establishment of an art collection. After the collection was initiated, Koponen served for ten years as an expert member of the art acquisition committee appointed by the foundation, overseeing its first acquisitions.
