Basic Mountain Biking Course on the Coast of Eastern Helsinki
The basic mountain biking course is suitable for cyclists with a little off-road riding experience or outdoor enthusiasts who are starting mountain biking as a hobby. This practical course will give you the skills to continue mountain biking independently and safely.
You can take part in the course with an electric-assist mountain bike, a full-suspension or hardtail mountain bike, or a fatbike.
Eastern Helsinki’s trails and outdoor routes meet the needs of many mountain bikers
From Vuosaari Paddling Centre, you can reach pine-needle trails, gravelled outdoor routes and more challenging technical sections within a few minutes. Kallahdenniemi and Uutela are excellent places for mountain biking, and you can continue the hobby there after the course as well.
Course programme
The course lasts 3.5 hours. The programme will be adapted according to the instructor and participants. The course covers the following topics:
- Bikes and equipment
- Cycling safety, group riding and hand signals
- Good basic riding position
- Bike control using the body, including leaning, speed control, cornering and riding hills
- Riding over obstacles
- Bike washing, maintenance check and quick adjustments
You can take part in the basic course if you already have some off-road riding experience, around 25–75 hours, and can manage one hour of continuous light physical exertion on your own or rented bike without difficulty.
What to bring
You will need your own mountain bike, helmet, snacks and drinking water for the course.
- Participants can rent a fatbike from Natura Viva at a special price of €39 / 3.5 h.
Dress in weather-appropriate cycling or outdoor clothing. Loose trouser legs are not suitable for cycling.
- Clothes for breaks and a change of clothes
- Waterproof and windproof jacket and trousers
- Gloves and footwear suitable for cycling
- Headwear
