The Museum's Concerts

Wall text

Music history is not only conserved in the Sibelius Museum, but also made. Concerts have been organised in the museum for decades. The museum’s concert hall has heard performances from artists like Liisa Pohjola, Iiro Rantala and Charlemagne Palestine – as well as hundreds of others.

The Wednesday Concert series Sibbe Live! began in 1968 when the current building was opened. Concerts were organised already when the museum operated in Hus Lindman, but the facilities in the building were ultimately too small. The 140-seat Sibelius Hall of the current building has been praised acoustically as one the best concert halls in Turku. In addition to chamber music, the Wednesday series quickly broadened to folk music and jazz.

As of late, alongside the Wednesday series, the museum has organised a Friday series, Fredagar på Sibbe, focused on more experimental music, the Sibbe Atrium Live! series to cheer up August evenings, Music in the Museum in collaboration with Turku Conservatory, and, the newest, focused on Sibelius’ music, Sommar Sibelius in collaboration with Turku Arts Academy. In addition to concerts produced by the museum, many people and associations rent the concert hall to organise their own concerts. Live music can be, therefore, heard in the Sibelius Museum nearly weekly.
