Kari Cavén - Old Women’s Memory

Sculpture

*Our favorite*

”Old Women’s Memory has become my favorite because of its playfulness. In the artwork, the world represented by rocking chairs – aging, safety, and calmness – meets play, silliness, and a sense of wild momentum. Old Women’s Memory shows a life full of experiences, and now it’s speeding up! I really wish I could leap right through the piece.”

-Johanna, Curator of Education

Wood has been a central material for Finnish artists, from medieval church sculptures and vaivaisukko poor-box figures to today’s conceptual artists. Kari Cavén’s (b. 1954, Savonlinna) began his career as a painter, but in the 1980s – inspired by the Italian movement known as Arte Povera – he turned to creating art from recycled materials. Cavén finds the materials for his work on rubbish heaps, in old barns, almost anywhere. “You must search everywhere. You never know what you might find.”
