On this walking tour of the fortress area, you will hear about the fascinating history and present day of Suomenlinna.
The tour introduces the main sights, such as the Great Courtyard and what was once one of the world’s largest dry docks. The guided tour also includes free admission to the Ehrensvärd Museum.
In 1748, construction work began off the coast of Helsinki, marking the beginning of Viapori’s history. The bastion fortress, built across six islands, served as the base of the Swedish Archipelago Fleet, for which a dry dock was also built. By the end of the Swedish period, what had begun as a construction site had developed into one of the largest population centres in the area of present-day Finland.
The Russian period of the fortress began during the Finnish War, with the surrender of the fortress in 1808, an event that astonished contemporaries. The Russian period lasted 110 years and left behind, among other things, numerous barrack buildings and the earthworks built on the southwestern side of the fortress islands.
The Finnish period of the fortress began in 1918, under the dark shadow of the Finnish Civil War. Since then, the fortress islands have become a living garrison community and a unique cultural heritage site visited by more than one million people each year.
