Maaria Wirkkala (b. 1954, Helsinki) is best known for her site-specific installations and spatial works. Her art often explores themes such as memory, presence, boundaries, vulnerability, and the relationship between humans and the environment. Her works are typically built from subtle gestures, materials, and spatial situations that leave much open to the viewer’s interpretation.
Wirkkala has participated in the Venice Biennale in 1995, 2001, and 2007.
