Nina Lassila - Creature
VideoNina Lassila (b. 1974 Helsinki) often bases her works on text, video, and photography. She draws inspiration from historical figures, events, and various objects. By combining fact, fiction, and personal narratives, she writes scripts for her video works and frequently develops characters whose stories she depicts. In many of her works, she examines identity, gender, and norms. She is also interested in social, environmental, supernatural, and political phenomena.
The Creature presents imagery resembling surveillance camera footage, accompanied by a nature documentary–style narration about a rare creature that remains hidden from our view.
The Creature series is inspired by Lassila’s memories of her first camera equipment and her relationship with it. Recycled electronic waste also serves as a metaphor for aging: what do we do with people when they no longer function as they once did?
