2. Architect Alvar Aalto in Oulu
Oulu is home to three major ensembles designed by Alvar Aalto.
The O.Y. Toppila Sulphite Pulp Mill, established in 1931, was Aalto’s first industrial design project.
The Koskikeskus master plan grew out of Aalto’s winning proposal in the 1942 design competition organized in connection with the Merikoski Hydroelectric Power Plant. Following the competition, he was commissioned to prepare a town plan for the area.
The design of the Typpi Oy industrial community began in Aalto’s office in 1950 and continued until 1968. Typpi Oy became the final industrial project designed by Aalto’s architectural practice.
