Veikko Vionoja - Janitor's Son

Painting

*Our favorite*

Veikko Vionoja’s modest charcoal drawing touches the viewer in all its simplicity. In the eyes of the Janitor’s son, one can see an adult gaze from a time when childhood had to give way far too early. The oldest work in the exhibition offers a moment to pause amid the spectacle of contemporary art and brings us back to the essentials. What was it like to be a janitor’s son in 1944?”

***

Veikko Vionoja (1909-2001) was from Central Ostrobothnia, which can be seen in his choice of subjects and handling of light. Vionoja paints his home district and its culture; landscapes, open fields, courtyards, peasant buildings and rural people. He is a master of geometry, feeling of silence and stillness, and especially the dim light.
