The locations of the museum
Wall textDuring the museum’s first years, 1926–1930, the Sibelius Museum and its small collection had one room in the Åbo Akademi Main Building at Tuomiokirkonkatu 3 in its use. Since then, the museum has been located in several addresses on Piispankatu.
1930–1952 Tryckerihuset
During the years 1930–1952 the Sibelius Museum was located in Tryckerihuset, the Press House at Piispankatu 19. The museum first had three, and later five, rooms. The Åbo Akademi biological collections were located in the same building. Tryckerihuset is still in Åbo Akademi’s use.
1952–1968 Hus Lindman
Between 1952 and 1968 the Sibelius Museum was located in Hus Lindman at Piispankatu 15. The museum had seven rooms. The museum also organised the first concerts in Hus Lindman. Today, restaurant Grädda operates in the building.
1968– Piispankatu 17
The current Sibelius Museum building was finished in 1968. The building was designed by architect Woldemar Baeckman, and it was originally also used by Åbo Akademi departments of Art History and Musicology. In addition to the Sibelius Museum, the choirs Brahe Djäknar and Florakören and the symphony orchestra Akademiska Orkestern work in the building.
