Erik Granfelt - In Front of the Mirror

Painting

Erik Granfelt (b. 1919, d. 1990) was a graduate of the Free Art School of Finland and a student of Unto Pusa and Sam Vanni. Granfelt’s painting style can be described as applied Cubism, a distinctive semi-abstract approach. His work is particularly notable for serving as a bridge between figurative and non-figurative art. This approach made it easier for audiences to gradually and cautiously become accustomed to modern art, as familiar representational elements were still present.

These qualities are also evident in the work In Front of the Mirror: the rhythm of lines and color surfaces, contrasting colors, and lively textures. At the center of the painting is a nude female figure, mirrored in reflection. The work is not a riot of color, however, as the colors have been subdued against white. Considered a sensitive and lyrical expressionist, Granfelt painted the piece with a dry brush in thin layers of oil. The exact year of its execution on hardboard is unknown.

Granfelt frequently held exhibitions together with Per Stenius, Anitra Lucander, and Rafael Wardi, with whom he was closely connected artistically.
