Who was Augustin Ehrensvärd?

The pavilions located on the grounds of Herttoniemi Manor were ordered from the German architect Carl Ludvig Engel (1778–1840), who was probably the most famous architect of his time in Finland. This is the same Engel who also designed the current buildings surrounding Senate Square in Helsinki. The Helsinki Cathedral and the National Library are a few examples of buildings designed by Engel.

The buildings commissioned by Carl Olof Cronstedt and designed by Engel were only the pavilions located on the manor grounds. Engel’s design for an obelisk, however, was never built. The octagonal pavilion built in the English garden also differs somewhat from Engel's original design. The pavilion in the garden has only one window, instead of the three windows originally shown in the design.
