Jiri Geller - Fucked

Sculpture

Jiri Geller (b. 1970 Kerava) is a sculptor who originally trained as a silversmith. His sculptures often appear mass-produced, yet they require months of meticulous work. Geller explains that through his work he creates a magical reality using sleight-of-hand illusions, which relates to his demanding and time-consuming material processes. The illusion of effortlessness is crucial, and all traces of craftsmanship must be erased. The name Jiri Geller is a pseudonym, referencing Uri Geller, who was known in the 1970s, among other things, for bending spoons.

Smiley faces, balloons, and astronauts represent the deceptively joyful and lighthearted pop of Geller’s work. The enormous effort and heaviness of the materials in his sculptures are invisible to the viewer. Geller has, for example, figured out how to make fiberglass look like a balloon or resin resemble milk. Often, it is impossible to guess the materials of his works just by looking at them.
