The Old Guard Room
The Old Guard Room was used by the castellan of the castle and his family during the Middle Ages. The room was built during the castle’s second phase of construction at the beginning of the 14th century. At the time, the castle was split by a cross-wall into the keep and the bailey. A three-floor palace section was located at the seaside end of the castle. The lowest floor was for storage, followed by the Old Guard Room, with the King’s State Room on the top floor.
At both ends of the Old Guard Room, you can see where the hypocaust furnaces were which provided warm air for the guard room and the rooms on the floor above it.
Within this room, you can get to know the different construction phases of the castle and find out how different solutions supported the castle’s defensive capabilities. The miniature models in the room visualise how the original fortress, built on an island, was extended as land uplift lowered the sea level.
