Turku Castle has guarded the mouth of the Aura River since the end of the 13th century. Its greystone walls hold within them the history of Finland, Sweden and other Nordic countries.
Throughout its history, the castle has functioned as a defensive fortress, luxurious residential palace, administrative centre, prison, granary and garrison. In 1881, a museum was established in the castle. Today, Turku Castle is an important piece of architectural history and a cultural tourism destination.
