The Castle's oldest privies

The oldest privies in the castle were structures supported on wooden beams or stones in the curtain wall. The first of these was built at the turn of the 13th–14th centuries on the second floor of the oldest living quarters. Some of the privies were located along the central cesspit on different floors. The central cesspit came down to the level of the yard, from where it could be emptied through a hatch. The toilet in the King's State Room had a separate cesspit that carried waste through the outer wall. At the output of the toilet shaft there is a flat limestone that prevented waste from flowing directly down the outer wall.
